Scranton is a city in Bowman County, North Dakota in the United States. The population was 281 at the 2010 census.[1]

Scranton was founded in 1907 along the Milwaukee Road transcontinental rail line known as the Pacific Extension. It was named after Scranton, Pennsylvania because, like that city, it was located within a region of coal mining.[4]

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 304 people, 125 households, and 86 families residing in the city. The population density was 343.6 people per square mile (133.4/km²). There were 139 housing units at an average density of 157.1 per square mile (61.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.01% White, 0.33% Native American, 0.66% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.66% of the population.

There were 125 households out of which 31.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.6% were married couples living together, 1.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.4% were non-families. 28.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.99.

In the city the population was spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 3.9% from 18 to 24, 24.0% from 25 to 44, 28.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.7 males.
